It’s safe to say this year is has been a huge year for making changes within our environment. The Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year 2019 is Climate Emergency. We clearly need to be making more sustainable decisions to ensure we do not have permanent affects on our environment.
This year we have seen influencers such as Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough taking their stand to ensure society is aware of their impact on the environment. The facts are truly terrifying, with 350,000 tonnes of textiles being send to landfill this year. That’s a shocking £450 million pounds worth of clothing.
With 2020 looming, here at Roberts Recycling Ltd, we plan on doing everything to not only influence schools and organisations to be greener and more sustainable, but we have also set our own green goals. In 2020, we will continue our Eco-Champion Competition, encourage schools to recycle as much as they possibly can to become Eco-Champion School of the Term. It couldn’t be easier to enter and the prize is fantastic. Simply recycle as much as you can and if your school recycles the most out of all the schools on our scheme, we will match your money made and present it to at charity of your choice.
We also aim to completely eliminate using plastic bags. We do offer alternatives to our recycling bags in the form of indoor boxes and external banks. Finally, we plan on expanding our recycling from recycling textiles to also recycling toys.
Here’s a few handy tips on how you can make your school greener in the New Year:
- Encourage students to walk to school
- Turn the lights off! Make sure the door is closed to keep the heat and use sustainable materials
- Plant fruit and vegetables in an area of the playground or hire a school allotment.
- Eat green! Are your school dinners locally and ethically sourced?
- Recycle!
